The Poqomam are an indigenous Maya ethnic group that lives primarily in the southeastern region of Guatemala. The Poqomam language is part of the Mayan language family, belonging to the K'iche'-Guatemalan branch. It is closely related to other Mayan languages like Kaqchikel and Tz'utujil.
- Historically, the Poqomam homeland was centered around the Motagua River valley in the departments of Guatemala, Jalapa, and Jutiapa. Their traditional territory spans the southeastern highlands and lowlands. They now live mainly in three regions: Chinautla (where their old greater city was located), Palin (in Escuintla) and San Luis Jilotepeque in Jalapa.
- Estimates put the current Poqomam population at around 70,000 people as of 2023. They maintain a distinct cultural identity, traditional dress, and agricultural practices.
- In recent decades, the Poqomam have been active in advocating for greater recognition and protection of their indigenous rights, language, and cultural heritage.
