Linguistic map of Guatemala
The Ixil people are an indigenous ethnic group based in the Ixil Triangle region of northwestern Guatemala. The Ixil population is estimated to be around 250,000 individuals.
The Ixil have a long history of inhabiting the mountainous area of the Ixil Triangle, which includes the municipalities of Nebaj, Cotzal, and Chajul. Their language, also called Ixil, is a Mayan language closely related to K'iche' and Kaqchikel. Many Ixil people maintain traditional cultural practices and beliefs alongside Roman Catholicism, which was introduced during the Spanish colonial period, 500 years ago.
Today, the Ixil people continue to advocate for their rights and the preservation of their cultural heritage. They participate in the political and economic life of Guatemala, while also maintaining traditional community structures and practices. Issues such as land rights, access to education and healthcare, and the impacts of extractive industries in their territory remain key concerns for the Ixil population today.
