The Kaqchikel are an indigenous Maya people native to central Guatemala. They are one of the largest Mayan ethnic groups, with an estimated population of around 1 million people.
The Kaqchikel homeland is primarily located in the departments of Chimaltenango, Sacatepéquez, and parts of Guatemala and Escuintla. They are also known as Cakchiquel, Caqchiquel and Kakchiquel.
The Kaqchikel have a rich cultural heritage dating back to the classic Maya civilization. They were one of the dominant Maya kingdoms during the post-classic period, maintaining a powerful capital at Iximche, near Guatemala City. The Kaqchikel resisted Spanish conquest for many years before eventually being incorporated into the Spanish colonial system.
The Kaqchikel continue to play an important role in shaping Guatemala's multicultural society.
