The K'iche' have a rich cultural heritage dating back to the classic Maya civilization. They were a powerful pre-Columbian kingdom, with their capital at the ancient city of Q'umarkaj (now, it is known as Gumarcaj). The K'iche' resisted Spanish conquest for many years but eventually incorporated into the colonial system.
